A 'hanging bobbin', carved in bone with pierced decortion 'FRANZ MULLER HUNG 1864' with black and clear glass beaded spangle

Frank Muller (31st October 1840 - 14th November 1864') was a German tailor who was hanged for the murder of Thomas Briggs, the first murder on a British train. The case was brought to popular attention due to increasing safety fears of rail travel, the pursuit of him across the Atlantic to the USA and his subsequent extradition back to England. King Wilhem I of Prussia tried to intervene to postpone the excution but failed and the execution went ahead outside Newgate Prision in front of a huge crowd of 50,000 spectators.
