A painting by Edward Seago which he donated to the fundraising appeal set up in response to the East Coast floods of 1953 is to go under the hammer as part of Keys Auctioneers and Valuers’ East Anglian Art Sale on Friday 21st November.
The oil on board is of ‘The Tall Mill – Vefre (Holland)’ and was bought by the vendor’s grandfather when it was donated; it has remained in the same family in the intervening 72 years.
The 1953 floods affected the East coast from Scotland right down to the Thames estuary, as well as the other side of the North Sea in Belgium and the Netherlands. 307 people were killed in the counties of Lincolnshire, Suffolk, Essex and Seago’s home county of Norfolk, where 100 people lost their lives.
The picture has a pre-sale estimate of £6,000-£10,000.
